Dental Porcelain

Porcelain is the most widely used material for the fabrication of crowns because of its excellent esthetic properties and its ability to closely mimic the appearance of tooth structure. Glazed dental porcelain is durable because it is smooth in texture and resistant to wear and discoloration. Its optical refractive properties is similar to enamel.

Although it has good compressive strength, dental porcelain is brittle. Different methods of strengthening porcelain have been developed. An example of for a porcelain strengthening is porcelain fused to metal. It allows porcelain to be used in dental restoration. Other porcelain strengthening methods are aluminous porcelain core and metallic foil substructures.
